Can Dogs Eat Ice?

In a practical sense, dogs can eat ice. Ice’s cool temperature can be helpful in calming dogs down and quickly reducing their temperature. Not only this, but any sort of crunchy dog treat will go down exceptionally well with your dog, including ice cubes.

Being made purely of water, ice cubes are generally safe to be fed to your dog either on their own or mixed into their water bowls.

Can Ice Cubes Damage a Dog’s Teeth?

There’s always a risk with food and treats causing damage to your dog’s teeth, including with ice cubes. Particularly hard cubes can be difficult to break through which, depending on how healthy your dog’s teeth are, may cause some issues.

Slightly softened ice cubes that have been sitting outside the freezer for a couple of minutes will be a bit easier to get through, which significantly reduces the risk of cracking.

Can Dogs Choke On Ice Cubes?

Although they melt, it is entirely possible for a dog to choke on an ice cube. This is especially true for larger ice cubes, which are harder to break down and swallow in one go. Smaller chunks of ice, however, are less of a choking hazard.

Can My Dog Eat Ice Cream?

Ice cream is another subject entirely. Ice cream is full of dairy and sugar, which, if given in too high of an amount, can be harmful to your dog. Giving them a couple of licks once in a while can be okay, but frequently offering large bowls of ice cream to your dog is not advised.
